Fruit of any kind before a lift.

I would not eat anything right before a fight. I suppose if I had a burning, gnawing, demanding hunger in my stomach, I would take a few bites of a piece of the aforementioned fruit.

That's about the only eating I would want to do right before excercise.

If I'm feeling hungry I go with a few walnuts and a tablespoon of honey.

It depends on the time frame you are talking about.

About an hour before exercise or weights you should eat a fairly large meal with protein and a good amount of carbs.

If you eat anything 30 minutes prior to exercise you want it to be small and with alot of carbohydrates, mainly simple carbs so they are absorbed quicker. As you can see fruit fits into this category quite well.

Immediately before training, yes. I usually eat my last meal 1 hour before, and usually try to keep it light on fat with plenty of complex carbs. The walnuts and honey is just if I have the sensation of feeling hungry. Anything you're digesting while working out is probably just going to sap your energy.
