    Trouble with the shot

I realize that I am a noob, and am taking my life into my own hands by posting outside of newbie town, but Im really having some trouble with my takedowns.

My basic standup is just a modified boxing stance, but I cant seem to lower my level without dropping my front knee.

effectively it looks like im doing a lunge and then turning.... I keep failing... any help?

ask your coach. sounds like you're not following through with your training leg, assuming you're talking about a double leg.

You should of course practice your drop-step 'till you're blue in the face, but when actually taking a shot remember that its much more how well you set it up than how perfectly you shoot (well, within reason).

Focus more on set-ups and concentrate on shooting for percentages. If you shoot seven times and get good penetration once, that's about all you can ask for. Work the set-up and make those seven happen sooner and don't sweat the 'perfect' mechanics too much.

A newbie opinion for what it's worth: I am taught not to go for a takedown out of the blue, but instead to set it up with other stuff.

    Hmmm, let's see:
    1. Don't shoot from too far away.
    2. Set up your shots.
    3. First, learn how to shoot with hitting your knee on the mat.
    4. After the above, you can learn how to shoot by just lowering levels.
    5. REMEMBER ABOUT GOOD POSTURE ALL THE WAY IN THROUGH AND OUT OF THE SHOT.

Would someone mind telling me a little about shooting knee down vs just lowering levels?

I was always taught to shoot with the knee down, I'm just curious as to what the advantage of not dropping the knee is. Thanks.

I made a half-assed attempt to think about this in terms of physics. I just woke up, give me a break.
