    Hell yeah! Hell no!
My dad taught me 3 things about fighting:
1.Hands go up, in front of face.
2."If you're gonna fight, don't talk, fight!" or How do sucker punch
3.How to hook the leg and throw from a standing grapple/clinch.

He had no formal MA/SD training, but he was the next to youngest of six brothers.
(And once went a three minute round with a Golden Glove boxer, quote:
"Son, that was the longest three minutes of my life.")

My parents taught me to never attempt to physically harm anyone or anything unless my life was in danger.

That lasted until about 3rd grade.

My parents never encouraged MAs, my dad is of the opinion that non-martial sports do more good for you in terms of getting you into better shape (Judo has only made specific muscles more pronounced) - he played soccer/basketball.

    On the subject of Judo:

"When I was your age I had buddies doing Sambo/Judo/Boxing who took me to their practices, I watched for a little and decided I can take them as is and just went to basketball, it's more fun and I don't have to get hit."

Still I am commended if not encouraged on my current training.

My family basically tells me that it's stupid to let someone hit you in the face and brain damage isn't worth it. However, they don't mind grappling, so it's all good. Maybe I'll take up a striking art in a few years, when my grappling is decent.
