I'd have to rewatch. To my recollection it was a verbal warning and that they weren't separated and it was just a few seconds before the final knee.
On a side note, in the TUF fight last night a guy landed a similar knee (only one though).

At 3:14 you can hear the warning, right before the final knee.
I also disagree with Cracky. Frank set them up intentionally to the head. I don't think that Renzo maneuvered to that.

I still like watching Frank Shamrock fight, as amater fact I like Frank Shamrock. He's an excellent martial artist, and a good fighter. He may not be a nice person but is that really what you want in a fighter.

To me it looks like a clear case of intentional foul play due to frustration. Frank was the man back in the day, but that's long gone.
Curiosity killed the cat. But damn it had a blast.
