He'll draw a big wwe crowd, but I can't see him as a legitimate threat to any top tier fighters.

Gardner's a footnote in wrestling history compared to Karelin, who deserves a whole chapter.

You can beat someone once and still not be better than they are - you just had a better day than them.

Did Gardner beat Karelin? Yes, unquestionably. Sure, it's one point, sure, it's a new rule, sure, he stalled the rest of the match - but even given that the point from Karelin breaking grip was a little cheap, how many men on the planet could prevent Karelin from scoring a single point on them after that "cheap" point? Has anyone other than Gardner ever taken Karelin to a draw?

Gardner's gold medal performance was the match of his life, and he never looked that good again, before or after. And he'll always be overshadowed in wrestling's history by Karelin, just like everyone else who's done Greco - and rightly so. Karelin was and is the best ever, and he'll always cast a long shadow over anyone who laces up the wrestling shoes. But on that day, Gardner won, cleanly and fairly, and no matter how much I love Karelin (and believe me, I've got a hardon for russian wrestlers) on that particular day he lost.

    I will buy that actually

The problem with Lash was that when he was a strong silent monster type he was great - he would have been a great "enforcer" type character. Unfortunately he comes across pretty poor as a promo, and consequently his in-ring (which is limited at best in 'rasslin terms) suffers

You and Asia are right. Gardner fought the match of his life that day. It's just that I hero-worshipped Karelin so much as a young wrestler that even today, many years later, it's hard for me give Gardner credit for the win. Gardner does deserve credit for winning though. He'll always be the guy that beat Karelin.

I'll stop derailing this thread now.
