best headgear

any suggestions for the best brand or type of headgear to protect your brainbox?

Although this isnt wha you asked , THE ABSOLOUTE WORST type of headgear that Ive seen is Pro Force .

I seriously must have seen 30-50 of the things rip in a single day .

You may want to try "Ren" if you can get ahold of it . I got my Gi from them and was looking at their headgear . All of the things I saw by them were REALLY Well-Made .

What do you want to do? Do you want to go full contact or just add a bit of safety? Do you want striking only or do you want to be able to grapple too?

Some studies show that the use of headgear and gloves actually INCREASE risk for long term damage by allowing you to stand there and absorb many more shots. The individual, and acute, damage from these blows is lessened but the cumilative effect is supposely greater.

I'm not saying don't wear headgear, but if you really want to "protect your brainbox" don't go full contact to the head.

well, i was doing san shou (until i sprained my knee last thursday) and what i wanted to know was whether there was any headgear out there better than what i have now. i was hoping for something like a comparison between for example everlast boxing headgear and macho martial arts headgear.

My vote is for "Ren"

They have an Inset Rigid Framewwork on the Outside , the things are Triple-Stitched ... they are the best ones Ive ever seen .

OMFG. I have two headgear. One is Everlast I use primarily for playing around with boxing gloves and the other is a black Macho foam one I use in tournaments!!!

They're both decent. I like the Macho one more to be truthful though EVEN if on the surface it does not seem as sturdy. I'm slightly afraid of ripping the Macho one (though no tear in the foam has ever occurred) and obviously that won't happen with the Everlast.

In terms of absorbing the shock I like the Macho one better too however this may be because the Everlast one borders on "too-tight" for my head.

Once thing I don't like about the Macho one is that I can't HEAR as good as when I'm wearing the Everlast one. This can be annoying if you're waiting to hear your name from a location that is not to your side, etc.

Both were around the same price ($40 CAD) but I did get a discount from the store.

Anything else you wanna know?

Foam gear is for incidental or accidental contact. It says so right on the package and most of the time on sticker attached to the gear. It is only meant to protect you when some is not actually trying to hurt you.

If you put in San Shou and Headgear intp google a bunch and stuff comes up.

The International Kickboxing Federation recommends TKO bran headgear for amateur fights, in fact they require it. There are 3 styles available but they must be TKO or at least deemed equivalent. Other types of headgear are NOT allowed.

"(*) Karate Foam Dipped Style Headgear will not be accepted.
Non IKF Kickboxing or Non USA Boxing or Approved Headgear will not be accepted."
