I used to do that with that exact same weapon - a Glock 23. I lived in a crummy neighboorhood and once almost blew away my clock-radio alarm. I also woke up once to find myself drawn down on a guy outside my apartment window who was smacking his girlfriend around.:qleft3:

Having kids in the house is the reason I keep my pistol on me or within arms reach at all times. This also allows me to keep it in Condition 1. When I'm asleep it's in a matress holster (ITWB holster modified to hang on my boxspring) within easy reach but not visible to a possible intruder.
I'm a big advocate of keeping a large caliber dog in Condition 1 as well. If nothing else it's an early warning system. With Sampson sleeping on the floor in front of the door I won't have to worry about waking up looking down (up?) the barrell of a weapon.
