Having that hand there is much better for being able to block really fast riposte attacks such as backfist or silat-style eye whips. If you're in a boxing stance, & you're fighting the typically FAST silat fighter, you'll get hit before you could possibly bob&weave or duck. I wouldn't hold the arm, myself, but support it with the palm or the hand heel if I felt the need, but the hand would be open.

it is a very versatile 'posture' and there were a lot of great remarks on it's use. the only thing i would add is that it allows for very rapid followup. hand combinations will be executed a bit more quickly if you move to and fro using the guardian/backup hand formation continously.
it is some analogous to the bagua lotus gua in that it tends to rely on waist movement for direction...scissoring movements of the arms dont have to be centrum driven like lotus does.
as a kuntao note re knives, if the knife is in the forward hand, the back hand can be used to palm strike the pommel and drive the blade tip in. this is a small 'jackhammer' type motion used in very close quarters. it may be repeated several times in a very short time, and is most effective if the opponent in pinned up against something. if someone is tensed or locked up and blocking you out, it is very hard for them to stop the sudden shock advance of the knife...then you redouble while changing angles and levels slightly.
