the first black belts where awarded by jigoro kano to denote which of his students he felt where very skilled, at that time there were only black belts(and white I guess) after that the proliferation of different colors and into different styles began, eventually the belts McDojo owners got a hold of the belt concept and it exploded to the point that we have magenta and tagerine belts with teal stripes and green polka dots which mean absolutely nothing and kano is rolling in his grave. to my knowledge only judo and bjj still award belts based on skill.

hi
i know , seen it today. dont konw how to put right, should read england.
know all about the belt system and where it came from, justs make me mad to see what they have done with it. at the start of bjj ( to me it's just kosen judo with better marketing) no gracie was awarded a black belt they only had dark blue, for their highest ranks.( only training with maeda four 4 yrs at most)
even bjj belts can and do get given for politics and not all judo schools give on merit. last school i trained at (judo) level of brown and black belts wasd low as all grading done from set throws no randori. -
