Kicks to the knee in MMA

I notice that no one ever gets kicked in the knee or the back of the knee, or even the shin in MMA matches. Looking at the UFC rules, I see it's not illegal:

Why don't we see kicks to the knee more often? Is this something that's a lot harder to do than you'd think?

See UFC 1-4, Royce throws side kicks to the knee like nobody's business, but in his case it was used to set up a shoot or clinch. Really knees are a pretty hard part of the body, hence "KNEE STRIKES" are used to great effect by so many MMAers (WAR Anderson!).

It might be possible to jam someone's knee with a kick, but it would be right on up there with jumping over a takedown shot.

Knees also bend. It wold be difficult to get a straight on shot at a knee. It is NOT like the movies.

People generally don't stand with their knees extended while in a fighting stance, making that kind of kneebreaking kick a lot more difficult and less effective, not to mention hard to land perfectly. People generally stick to thigh kicks instead.

Dude, how are you going to strike behind the knee if your opponent is in front of you or coming at an angle?

On the other hand, kicking the inside and outside of the knee (towards the back of the knee) happens a lot in MMA.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

Maybe by hooking around? I've accidentally fucked someone's knee up with a crappy osotogari, which is what got me thinking about this.

Thanks for the replies, guys. The thing about most people fighting with their knees already bent makes sense.

I've got peoples backs while standing, and then kneed them in the back of the thighs...seemed fairly ok...
