Is it a rank thing, means of unit identification..
The US Army has skill identifier "tabs"; an embroidered strip of cloth that is worn over your unit patch on your shoulder. The current authorized tabs are President's Hundred, Special Forces, Ranger, and Sapper. The Airborne tab is considered part of the unit patch.

Don't forget the "Governor's Ten" tab. I **** you not - some National Guard States have it.

    Understood,

We have identifiers but these are regiment, battalion and assault group based. - Regimental Arm Badges, Parachute Drop Zone Patches and Formation signs.

We also have "qualification" badges based upon completion of specialist courses such as sniper, signals, EOD etc. We don't have an identifier (other than cap badge) for our SF although their stable belt colour (sky blue) is very distinctive and their parachute qualification badge is upturned in design and different from the standard patch. Their beret is obviously very distinctive being sand coloured, although you'll rarely see it worn.
