It could be a mistranslation, as far as I know Judo at that time didn't have a specific Japanese name for Guard (It was simply referred to as between the legs)and when talking about other pins they used the Japanese for them, if Helio was mounted I'd have thought he would have said Tate Shiho Gatame, not mount.

Plus, you have to remember this is being translated from Japanese, probably by someone who's not a grappler, so things aren't going to be super-precise.

It isn't impossible to choke people from under mount.

I also remember reading an account of Kimuras about another VT fight he had in which either he or his opponent headbutted the **** out of his opponents midsection.

Osiris would have made Kimura proud.

My instuctor won a gi match at the last tourney he entered via choking the guy from under mount. My instructor grabbed the guy as they went down and by the time the guy based down in mount, he had to tap.

Its an interesting point that there wasn't a recognized term for "guard" back then
I know an old (and old-school) judo instructor in Taiwan who refers to guard as "in between" even when he uses standard japanese names or translated japanese names for positions in mandarin, maybe a connection there?

    sorry for tangent

What's funny to me is that the Kimura is a shoulder lock, yet other parts of the arm always seem to break first. What's the deal with that?

Also, I love that this is the huge epic match for BJJers, but Kimura describes it so briefly, with barely any detail, as if it had no significance to him. I always pictured it to be this hour long match between two equals, where one drastically outweighed the other, and in the end the little guy got caught in a hold and wouldn't quit.

That match to Kimura, "Oh Helio? Oh yeah, he tried to throw me once or twice, then I threw him a bunch of times, then I shoved my gut in his face and I arm locked him." lol.
