My rule of thumb when people ask me similarly durrr questions as this:

Average or larger sized male? Judo

Below average male or any female? BJJ

one armed mutant paraplegic? KALI, KNIVES LOL

I think Judo should get the nod on this one, the ability to grab someone coming at you, plant them into the ground, and then do a runner solves 99% of self defense concerns. And there is enough newaza training to make you competent if the fight goes to the ground.

There's no "better" martial arts. It doesn't matter if you do Judo or BJJ. If you are a BJJ n00b against a Judo master, you'd be finished. If you're a Judo n00b against a BJJ master, you're equally fucked.

It's all in the individual. Of course, if the art you're training in discourages questions, experimentation, and free thought, you should reconsider your choice.

I think it's more of a hiearchy, .hackrave

Your genetic raw material and your training intensity are MORE important then your art of choice, but some arts are definitely inferior when looked at from a point of view of efficiently learning to fight.

Now, the OP's question is pretty dumb - streetfights are won by surprise, most of the time, and the term "streetfight" is pretty vague. Does this OP mean gang violence? Violent crime ie a mugging? or a one v one fight that simply occurs outside of a sanctioned venue?

The OP's question also ignores the very close relationship between the two arts he asked about - probably forgivable as he simply didn't know.

They're both effective. Either one would serve as a good place to start. At some point you might want to consider learning both. Knowing how to throw someone to the ground AND knowing what do when you got there would be handy. Good luck.
