My kenpo instructor used to say that...pretty much exactly like that.

I don't know enough to comment on the specific, but this does seem like a good general definition.

Anyone care to refine or reject it?

Is this the right thread for this?

Wigginton's stuff: Tactics and the use of deadly force to help the person commit suicide and applied to armed/unarmed fighting skills.

Bujinkan: The refinement of body dynamics applied to Ju Jutsu weapons and striking skills.

Sho Ran Ryu: Breaking the other persons bones with high impact explosive strikes in rapid succession (as opposed to with one strike).

jiu jitsu is composed of 1) a system where positions are categorized into a hierarchy based on superiority and higher percentage for submitting or striking an opponent, and 2) a set of techniques or methods to move from one position to a superior one from where to launch an attack or escape in a confrontation.

Kinda verbosa, but there ya go.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

Arnis / Kali / Escrima - Any weapon is an extension of your body. The stick/sword/knife/axe is to you as your arm is to your elbow.

If you have no weapon around. your body is your weapon.

Perceiving combat this way makes empty-hand techs and weapons techs relatively identical and interchangeable.

Focus on immobilizing/destroying his weapons/methods to attack you. (Disarms/joint destruction) and takedowns.

    Also.. Footwork. footwork. footwork.
If you have no rhythm, no flow, if you can't dance.
then you won't get very far.

School motto (translated exactly from the kanji): Inside soft, outside hard.

A specific interpretation: Gentle hearted but strong when needed.

A short description out of my own brain: Quick and direct, cutting out the crap. Simple stand up with no frills.

Jiu-Jitsu - Make the other person submit themselves while you provide a minimal of assistance in helping them carry out that act.

Judo - Make the other person throw themselves while you provide a minimal of assistance in helping them carry out that act.
