The average unskilled or semi-skilled person is gonna know how to box. Very few people know how to adaquately defend, much less expect a low kick to the thigh.
Yeah, I think that's true also. Certain kicks are high percentage and do have a devistating effect such as those MT chopping roundhouses or kicks to the knees or shins that resemble a football punt more than a karate kick.

I know the sport version of this is called a double with a back trip.

I find that you have to wait a good 30-40 seconds for a good leg kick to start having an effect. I'm not sure if it would be immediately useful in an enviroment without extended pacing.

Against someone with experience against kicks yes.

Against someone in a standard boxing stance
a good leg kick will sweep/knock the average boxer off his feet usually.

They also have good range.. (depending on height I suppose).
He'll come in and try to close the gap. as long as you don't telegraph the kick
It'll take him off his feet.

Fight in a nightclub or whatever. almost everytime, they'll use a boxing stance of some kind.

Raising your leg to block the kick properly isn't instinctual. Boxers I've played with who claimed western boxing could block kicks tried a retarded version of either trying to use their hand and drop their guard or drop their stance low and attempt to block it with their elbow. after which I usually tap their head with a punch or kick to make my point or the block doesn't work and they end up sitting on their ass.

My father- who liked his drinky too, was a pro boxer. Got in a fight with a MA dude back in the late 60's he told me. He said he thought he was all that, and called this guy out, then the guy kicked him in the leg and the face in the span of 2 seconds. Just like you mentioned. Sobred him up fast- and he said- well can we quit now, and the dude went back in and bought him a beer. Lucky on his part. Stupid to scrap in da str33ts anyhow like that. Worse these days.

My plan- avoid trubs even before MA tactics come in to it, and don't get drunk either- worst beating I got was when drunk. Got stomped bad, then the guys pals joined in. Ouch- lucky I had friends walk around the corner in the nick of time. That is more how the streets work- they get you when you are down- its like wolves, a good psychopath can smell you...
