Antiseptics seem to work pretty well too. The Antibiotics are what made the strains resistant isn't it? Not the antibacterial soaps or tea tree stuff etc.

Yep. Antiseptics is what's used to prevent and treat topical infections on the skin and wounds, alcohol, antimicrobial soap and tea tree oils being some examples. Antibiotics are what kill microbia inside one's body (taken orally or IV.)

It is the abuse of antibiotics, not antiseptics that results in the development of antibiotic-resistant bugs. If it were antiseptics, we would be in deep **** just by using soap!

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

One of the BJJ dudes in my school crosstrains at another dojo across the town where mine is located, and there has been a report of mild staph infection there. The guy waited until it got bad and went to the doctor, and they said if he waited a day longer, he would have lost his arm or leg (not sure which), but the guys that train in my dojo wear rash guards now and has created mass paranoia among both schools about what has been going on. This shits getting intense as hell now.

Your school should do a massive cleaning of your matts. And you should carry a bottle of purell ;)

The jury is still out on anti-bacterial soaps and drup resistant organisms. There's no evidence that any bugs have developed a resistance to triclosan (the active agent in anti-bacterial soaps) but triclosan targets a specific gene in bacterial organisms so resistance development is a concern. Should an organism arise that becomes resistant to triclosan that would be bad, especially if it arose in one which was prone to transferring it's genetic material to other bacteria.

It's not recommended to use anti-bacterial soaps outside of medical settings. Anti-bacterial soaps will definately remove the bad germs from your skin when you use it. Unfortunately it also removes your body's natural bacteria which actively repels foreign organisms. I wouldn't recommend constant use of anti-bacerial soaps at home but using it after rolling isn't a bad idea.

Instead of antibacterial soap, use something alcohol-based. It kills bacteria much faster and more effectively.

I saw that product on walgreens yesterday. I should buy some and put in on my gym bag.

most of the anti-bacterial hand sanitizers are just an ancohol-based gel. MRSA has been a problem for years as a secondary staph infection in hospitals (usually occuring after a surgery and passed from patient to patient) but it wasn't a community problem until it started manifesting itself outside of hospitals.

and Teh El Macho is teh correct (as usual) overuse of anti-biotics are the casue of the resistance not overuse of anti-bacterials. However, overuse of antibactials can cause the destruction of beneficial bacteria on your hands as well as the harmful bacteria. The alcohol-based gel, if I recall correctly, dries the waxy protectant cell wall of the organism, when in free-floating stage, and makes it succeptable to destruction.

A simple 10% bleach to 90% H2O solution will work to clean the mats. Wash all your gear in hot H2O and use bleach and immediately put into a dryer. Wash you jock strap and/or underwear seperately as feces (ewww) can disperse in the water and soil your other gear. This will help destroy the cell wall as well.

Clean you gym bag, shoes, gloves, etc. with the bleach/H2O solution as well.

I soak my mouthguard in Listerine after usage. It makes it last not as long but seems to keep it clean, as Listernine in a phenol derivitive, and tastes fresh and minty.

Take a hot shower and the mechanicial disinfection (scrubbing with soap) should suffice for body cleansing.
