    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    AKKO - Does it suck?

I'm of course talking about http://american-kyokushin.com

There are pictures of the instructor in an american flag print gi, handlebar mustache abound, no search results on anybody involved coming up in google, youtube, etc. -- and they frequently go to Disney World.

Can someone look at this site and see if they suck, so I can avoid them? They seem to be the only Kyokushin dojo in or around Phoenix, Arizona... so this is breaking my heart, as I really want to learn Kyokushin.

Not by Rex Kwon Do, though.

Looks pretty damn good to me, from the photos i imagine there will be a good emphasis on conditioning.

Couldn't find any pics of stars and stripe gi.

Is $75.00/month, class twice a week a good deal?

I saw the Stars and stripes gi you were talking about:

But it does seem to be a very good organization, with links to jujitsu and judo. Best thing to do is check it out rather than just go by what you saw on the website.

Edit: 75 dollars a month for twice week is about 9 dollars a class, which isn't bad. Most places let you take a class for free first or let you watch. If they don't allow either then you should be wary.

I dont know the exact coversion from to $ but that works out to less than $10 a lesson which sounds pretty reasonable.

Best thing for you to do would be to go down and try a class out and see how you like it. Be warned though Kyokushin is tough, I found it to be the toughest, most challenging MA I've tried. Don't let that put you off though, persist and you will become a really hard bastard.

Just out of interest what made you choose Kyokushin?

I took Shotokan under a respectable Sensei in the ASKF (All-South Karate Fed) in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina.

I actually can't go check it out right this second, because I'm in North Carolina. I'm moving to Arizona before the year is out, and wanted to have a good dojo waiting for me.

I've always wanted to take Kyokushin, but there's never been a dojo near me.

Any karateka can vouch for this place? The more I look, the more I like it. I just heard bad things about AKKO. Their belt system also differs from IKO1/2. For some reason.

I can't find anything about Fred Buck. At all.

Karate seems lacking when it comes to counters. But I guess striking gets the job done if you can take a few hits yourself.
