I was thinking about buying little steel balls at Home Depot then making like a bean bag out of them.
Would that work well, Any ideas...?

You know there are reasons for punching bags and targets. One of those reasons just might happen to be to condition your knuckles with the least likelihood of injuring yourself. Give it some thought, if you still decide to go with the metal ball idea let me know, I'll buy some stock in your local urgent care or hospital.

That with the metal balls is a VERY bad idea. A good exercise for conditioning knuckels are knuckel pushups.

Try eating tums and some weight bearing exercise. IIRC, bones get stronger as you load them more. Hitting a surface may or may not help. I dunno.
Tightening the muscles and ligaments/tendons of the hand can't hurt much either. If handwraps can help stabilize and prevent injury, muscles there to hold it in place wouldn't hurt either.
And, use good form. Don't mess up your wrist. and strengthen your wrist *and forearms, for that matter* to make sure you keep it rigid.

When I was younger, I used to hit a concrete wall. Don't do it.
I realised that the hard way - once after a strong punch my hand turned blue for half an hour, but I didn't feel practically anything. :o

alright so the "metal bean bag" is a bad idea and will **** my hands up.
are knuckle pushups the only way to make knuckles stronger/more tolerant to pain?
also, why only do knuckle pushups with index/middle finger?

It also tends to cause improper alignment of the wrist, especially with certain types of punches (eg: hook, WC straight punch).
