You know there are reasons for punching bags and targets. One of those reasons just might happen to be to condition your knuckles with the least likelihood of injuring yourself. Give it some thought, if you still decide to go with the metal ball idea let me know, I'll buy some stock in your local urgent care or hospital.

Try eating tums and some weight bearing exercise. IIRC, bones get stronger as you load them more. Hitting a surface may or may not help. I dunno.
Tightening the muscles and ligaments/tendons of the hand can't hurt much either. If handwraps can help stabilize and prevent injury, muscles there to hold it in place wouldn't hurt either.
And, use good form. Don't mess up your wrist. and strengthen your wrist *and forearms, for that matter* to make sure you keep it rigid.

It also tends to cause improper alignment of the wrist, especially with certain types of punches (eg: hook, WC straight punch).
