I'm thinking the pure shock of severe limb trauma would wake the person up...sort of like smelling salts.
You'd put on the choke, they'd go to sleep, then immediately jump awake the second you start hacking into their limb.
You might be able to use it for a wood chop style, "Put the hand on the stump and back away!" amputation...but even then, I'd imagine the victim would jump awake immediately after the blow.
Of course, this is all pure conjecture, and I don't think anyone is willing to prove this theory.
