    Boxgymnasium Heidelberg

The Boxgymnasium offers classes in boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, and MMA. The classes are usually informally divided between fighters and those training for fitness, although both groups are very welcome.

The boxing classes are well-taught and attended by lots of experienced fighters. Once you have gloves, a mouthpiece, and head protection you are allowed to spar, and anyone planning to fight is encouraged to do so and allowed to focus on their sparring. They run for 2 hours and include a warm-up, followed by pad or bag work, partner drills, and sparring.

The muay thai classes are similar, and many of the Boxgymnasium fighters compete in muay thai competitions. They run for 2 hours, include a 10-15 minute cardio warmup followed by pad/bag work, partner drills, and sparring (also not mandatory except for competitors).

The kickboxing classes are not "fight-oriented," in the opinion of the instructor, but rather geared primarily towards point-sparring kickboxing competition. The majority of the children training at the Boxgymnasium train in these classes, and although the level of conditioning cultivated is the same, these classes are "not recommended" for full-contact fighters, although full-contact kickboxing is also an option for fighters. These classes run for 2 hours, include pad work, partner drills, and sparring.

The mixed martial arts/brazilian jiu-jitsu classes also run for two hours and focus primarily on grappling techniques for use in MMA competition, mostly culled from judo and brazilian jiujitsu. The grappling-themed classes are usually taught by Judo and visiting BJJ instructors. Basic techniques are taught and drilled, including wrestling takedowns, judo throws, and jiu-jitsu sweeps, positions, and submissions. On the ground they train with MMA gloves and strikes, and when standing they spar with takedowns.

The majority of Boxgymnasium fighters and students are, however, primarily stand-up fighters, and grappling is not their strong point or focus. The grappling techniques taught are solid and correct, but basic. The MMA classes are geared towards giving fighters with muay thai training a basic understanding of grappling for MMA competition, in keeping with the Boxgymnasium's generally "sprawl-and-brawl" style of MMA.

Classes are taught in German, although all instructors can yell at you in English too, if you'd prefer.

The gym is right behind the NATO barracks here in Heidelberg, so anyone stationed here with the U.S. military should really check it out.

Boxymnasium Heidelberg changed it's location to Redtenbacher Str.5 in 69126 Heidelberg close to Kaufland. Much bigger gym with a fitness and weight lifting area. For anyone who really does want to work out. Instrucors are all experienced fighters, even those who teach the kickboxaerobics class. check out the new gym, more information and pictures on www.boxgymnasium.de.
