    Um....that's kicking with the shin..

Maybe the angle is misleading, but he's kicking with Thai mechanics.

No it's true he is kicking with his instep. Masato ALWAYS does this though. You have to remember that every fighter has adapted the moves to their own personal way of doing things. Yes he "does Muay Thai" but his style is a more kickboxing influenced one similar to the way Europeans have developed.

He tends to kick with his instep but he makes it work with all his leg kick KOs. He also has a more lateral movement style so it suits his stick and move strategy better to throw the kick at a distance with his foot. Is it classical Muay Thai technique though? Not really, but a lot of fighters don't neccessarily exhibit classical technique.

In fact if you really want to get technical about it, not only does he usually kick with his foot he almost never turns over his hip either. This became obvious when he lost to Souwer where they kept on trading leg kicks but Souwer landed more damage because he turned over his hip. You can also see that Masato's body kick mechanics are a bit awkward looking too when he fights, he rarely throws them but when he does he is very erect, doesn't lean back far enough and still hits with his foot. Compare this to someone with a more classic muay thai technique like Buakaw. In traditional technique you aim with the shin but if they move away you will still hit them with the foot. Kicking with his instep is probably also why he keeps injuring his foot such as when he had to pull out of the 2005 tournament.

Howevever every fighter adapts the techniques and makes it work for them like I said. You know who's another fighter who always hits with his foot? Crocop. He seems to do ok with it though.

really now, i just thought that the bag was really fucking big so even if he was kicking with the shin it still looks like his instep is making contact with the bag
guess you learn something new every day

He used his shins when kicking the thai-pads though. When he kicks he drops his right hand, just a for split second, is that an MT thing? Does he ever kick with his left leg?
