    Rickson Gracie Choke Documentary: Irony

Ok I'm nearly done watching this vid

    http://www.google.com/videoplay\?doc...05578108081414
It's a documentary on Rickson's Gracie's career in Vale Tudo, focusing on the Vale Tudo Japan 1995 event. It also encompasses a bit of documentary on other competitors Koichiro Kimura (Judoka and Shootfighter) and Todd Hayes (Kickboxing champ).

I find the bitter irony of the views of these fighters particularly Todd and Rickson when compared to conventional wisdom today most amusing.

The scene where Todd receives the gloves he's supposed to where, and he and his camp start cracking jokes about how "real" the fight was with "pillows on their hands." The idea that now he will not be able to lay Rickson out as fast as he'd like because of the extra cushion for protection. Today it's generally accepted knowledge that lightweight MMA gloves, do much more for protecting a striker's hand than it does for protecting his opponents head. In fact many argue that the reason stand-up strikers do so much better today, is because they can swing for the fences with much less fear of injury...which of course is debatable.

The scene where Helio comments on how his sons aren't so great because THEY are great, but rather because the ART is great :new_Llol:

Rickson commenting on how boxing, kickboxing, TKD, and Karate are all great "sports" but they aren't REAL fighting, and how Jiu-Jitsu is all about real fighting, while they are merely talented athletes within their bubble.

There's much more, but seriously watch this vid. It certainly adds a bit of context to the history of the sport today.

I just realized that I posted this in YMAS. Can someone move this to the MMA forum?

The best part of Choke is clearly the part where:

    Spoiler:
Yuki Nakai comes running out of the match that Gordeau eye-gouged him during, almost completely blind, screaming, "RICKSON!!! I'M COMING FOR YOU!!!"

The worst part of this movie? This.

Oh man this gets better! Jeez, this guys kickboxing camp sure is whiny about the rules. Now the complaint is the standing 8 count, and how if there's no count on the ground, then there shouldn't be one standing up, because that apparently helps the grappler due to there being a second chance on their feet but not on the ground.

I find it funny, because the fight I'm competing in next month has similar rules, but I thought that the standing 8 count was a disadvantage to a grappler, as we can't strike our way into a GnP and must use takedowns else the fight will never get to the ground.

I suppose in hindsight such a rule does tilt it in favor of the grapplers

Choke is the reason why I think Yuki Nakai is a badass.

Yuki Nakai is badass. He fought Gerard Gordeau for more than 25 minutes and, after being blinded in his right eye by Gerard, fought Craig Pittman for more than 15 before he fought Rickson. Also, his fight with Rickson lasted for more than six minutes, which is longer than what the movie would have you believe (the magic of editing, ladies and gentlemen).

Nowadays, Nakai is a BJJ black belt and is the president of the Japanese Confederation of Jiu-Jitsu.

I have Choke on DVD. It is an interesting watch. But yeah, it pretty much is Gracie propaganda. I have a book on the Gracies that is pretty muhc propaganda too. Man, the length this family will go to look better than everyone else.

By the way, the book I mentioned is actually good for Garcie history. I didn't finish it, and I have looked at it for about 2-3 years, but it is a good read. They talk about ALL the Gracies. Even the one who died a few decades ago by a hang gliding accident. The chapters are by each Gracie, not chronological order.
