how do you do a proper headbutt, like in Burmese Boxing or old NHB?

Drive your head forward, impacting with your target around your hairline (assuming you aren't old and bald) make sure you don't impact the hard parts of his skull, his elbows, or his knees, everywhere else, it will hurt him more than you.

Getting a really strong neck is also a good idea.

Seriously though, Cracky is on point. A head butt to a hard target will hurt the striker like heck.

One time a guy headbutted me in the temple while I was in his guard, the concussion induced nausea almost made me stop, but instead, I passed his guard and armbarred him 5 seconds later.

I have always been told to go for the temple or the nose/eye area....anything else and your running the risk of hurting yourself.

The stomach and ribs are fine targets.

The way I was taught was to lean/step forward a little, bend at the waist (one motion) keep your neck tight, aim at using the area around your hairline like cracky said, DO NOT whip your head into it, ie tilt head back and whipping it forward, you can **** up your neck quite easily if you're practicing it.

Yeah, there's no whipping, and there should be no leaning either. You should always stay based.

I was instructed to lower the head and thrust forward, as opposed to the "Hollywood headbutt" where you swing your head like a hammer. Aim towards the "mask" part of the face, where bones are weak and delicate. I was also instructed to keep the head stabilized with the hands while headbutting, much like you would when pulling someone into a knee.
