My orthodontist gave me a mouthguard designed to take braces into account. I don't know how tough it would be to find. It's not a boil and bite, and it's a bit annoying compared to one that is, but at least you can do the things you'd like to.

Also depending how recent "just got braces" is, your brother has some cajones on him. For the first two or three days after the fact I felt like dying.

    Ask the orthodontist.

I personally had to get mine back on because my retainer broke and screwed up my nice teeth in about 2 days (sucktacular), so I'm just waiting to get a mouthguard until I can take em off again in October. But if he's in for the long haul have him ask his orthodontist about a special mouthguard.

To be safe ask the orthodontist/dentist what they reccomend. I am pretty sure you can get them at sporting goods stores or at very least online. I tried to find mine, but I haven't done any serious sparring in so long I think I may have lost it somewhere. A quick search reveals that there are plently of mouth guards made for people with braces, but I'd still ask the doc what they prefer.
