    Ergun Caner

    The False Story:
After 9/11, he became a hot commodity on the speaking circuit as someone who knew about the evils of Islam firsthand. Before the shock waves from the terror attacks had died down, he was lacing his sermons with his own tale of having been raised in Turkey as the son of a religious leader and trained in a madrassa to wage jihad against Americans.
In one 2001 sermon, "From Jihad to Jesus," he said he didn't know much about Christians the first 17 years of his life because "there's not that many of them in Turkey." One CD was until recently marketed this way: "Do you believe God can change the heart of a hardened terrorist? Former Muslim Ergun Caner, who came to America to be a terrorist, shares his testimony of how he came to know Jesus Christ."All that made for great post-9/11 storytelling. And it helped Caner and his brother, Emir, sell a lot of books. (In 2002 they published and promoted Unveiling Islam: An Insider's Look at Muslim Life and Beliefs, one of many books bearing the Caner name.) In 2005, Caner was appointed to his current post as president of Liberty University Theological Seminary.

    The True Story:
In recent months, a group of Muslim and Christian bloggers have made an airtight case against many of Caner's fabrications using the kind of documentation -- videos, podcasts, recorded sermons -- the digital age makes possible.

The Life Stories of Ergun "Mehmet" Caner
Here's the basic outline of Ergun Caner's actual life story, as told, more recently,, in some of his books and public appearances and pieced together from public records in recent months by bloggers. Ergun Caner was born in 1966 in Sweden to a Swedish mother and Turkish father. His parents settled in Ohio a few years later and were divorced when Caner was 8. Caner lived with his mother and spent time and religious holidays with his father.

Tony said the Cyprus Newspapers were full of Tony's story and that's how Michael Wright heard of him. I can't do it but the Newspapers for that time could be checked.
And if his story hit the news, surely the Alcapone he says was there at the same time would have too? Alcapone's murder and rape is more serious than TA's assault and theft. [I know that according to this thread the only publicly reported conviction for murder and rape by an Alcapone was a year or so after TA was back in England].
It does all have the 'sound' of easy exaggeration. It's LOTS incidents of people being maimed, killed, Saudi Ambassador being protected more than once, while under fire, and protected by killing the assailant. Easy to say, sounds like the action films.
If a Saudi Ambassador to England was fired on and someone was killed there would have been an International response - was the assailant an Israeli? Western? Islamic Extremist? Was it justified to kill him? This would have hit the news with dangers of an International incident.
Ive searched and thus far have not found anything.

There has been no major international incident of that sort.

The siege of the Iranian Embassy in London resulted in the death of a British Police lady. Recently the assasination of an Hamas Leader by Israeli's was major news.

And of course the deaths on the ship trying to break into Gaza has been major international news.

No Saudi Ambassador to England has been in the News after being under fire with Terrorists shot as a result.

I am sure the Tony has invented facts and exaggerated others as did the Baptist Pastor/ Ex Muslim mentioned above.

The question is which facts are invented and which are true?

True? : Born in North London. In prison in Cyprus for some sort of theft. Speaks Greek. Met Michael Wright. Came to the UK and joined a Church. Married. In prison in the UK for accidental killing a lady when driving his car and denying it to the Police.

    False?:

    Great work, Mr P.

Remember though - in the first edition of Taming the Tiger (which I have) it was 1985 not 1987 when he went to work for the IKFF and met 'the love of his life' - would you forget what year it was? Subesequent editions have been changed to 'correct' the timeline and make it looked vailed (which it is most certainly not - something that the publisher is aware of).

Don't stop... I feel the truth is very close to coming out...

    email from Tony Anthony

This is an emailed reply from Tony Anthony that I've been copied in on:
Thank you for the email concerning the validity of my testimony and background.

Taming the Tiger is a true life story; however what many people do not know is that many of the identifying details and descriptions in the book have been changed to protect the identity of certain people and groups portrayed. My name “Tony Anthony” is not actually the name that I went by in China or in any of the competitions that I took part in. We did not enter my full details in the book, as there are sensitive issue involved whereby I have had a death threat from my family in China for ending quite a long family tradition. We will be adding a disclaimer in future editions of Taming the Tiger to explain this as we have had to protect the identity and description of numerous people in my story.

The various queries that you raised have largely resulted from an absence of internet based information (for the reasons I have already explained) as we have had this from a few other people in the past. If someone was trying to do a background check on me, it is no surprise that they would not able to come up with very much. It is also very confusing to search the internet on the subject of Martial Arts, and I am not entirely sure where your enquirer would have searched exactly. It very much depends on which Kung Fu World Title your enquirerwould have been looking under as there are a large number of world championship competitions in Kung Fu held across the world and especially in Asia, both modern and ancient and they can be quite varied as some incorporate a variety of styles of Kung Fu and others specialise in specific techniques, which can all be very misleading.

The age, scale and level of these competitions also depends upon who is organising the competition, as they could be organised by a revered master (often self-promoted) who has developed a particular style (and the competition is often based on how well their own students do in the style they have taught), or alternatively they could be organised by an awarding body composed of a group of masters or Abbott’s that share the common vision to promote the whole science of Kung Fu. There are no end to Kung Fu schools, organisations and federations around the world, and they would each subscribe to a different Kung Fu world championship, which makes things very confusing – although each one would try to say that theirs was the ultimate one. This was one of the points that I tried to communicate in the book, as I did not feel that I was the best by any stretch of the imagination, as there were so many advanced students and grandmasters that never entered the strand of competitions that I entered in, and they were at a much higher standard than me by far. That is also why on the front cover subheading of my book it states: “The remarkable true story of “a” Kung Fu World Champion” instead of “The remarkable true story of “the” Kung Fu World Champion”.

The competitions that I took part in are over 200 years old – and they are derived from the lineage of “Gong So” who goes back to the Manchu Dynasty. These competitions are held in mainland China and as they are so specialised I have not known them to be publicised outside of the relevant circles, which is another reason why I doubt very much that you would ever find these competitions advertised on a Google search engine.

I hope that this sheds a bit more light on the matter. We have actually produced a few DVD’s which include interviews with key people that feature in my testimony such as Michael Wright, and I would be very happy to send a free copy to you. If your enquirer would like to get one of these, then please forward a postal details at your earliest convenience.

You may also find it interesting to read an email that Michael Wright has made in response to several queries that were made that I hope you find interesting. His email address: mandew@spidernet.com.cy

    Doesnt really help much.
Im confident TA was in Nicosia prison, Im also confident he got attacked whilst he was there.
He was likely using the name Tony Anthony and I believe Michael Wright visited him and talked to him about christianity.
All of which Michael Wright can confirm, what he cannot confirm is what TA did before he went into prison in Nicosia which at present is without any verification.

i also doubt Michael Wright would be allowed/willing to tell anybody what TA was in prison for.

Wow, he certainly used a lot of text to tell us absolutely nothing at all, not to mention that he's only "a" world champion, not "the" world champion.

And "Gong So" cough Really??? One would think that if he had once been fluent in Chinese, he'd come up with a name that doesn't just sound like he mangled 'gong sau'

What frustrates me is this is pretty much done and dusted. He will never come out and admit he is a lier unless he is forced to do so because of irrefutable evidence stacked against him. So it's now just a case of anyone with a mind of their own knowing he's full of bullshido and his brain washed clan following to admire him
