I started out the same way. It comes with practice, get a lighter jump rope (speed rope), even if just for yourself. You'll get different benefits out of being able to coordinate hands and feet with a quicker rope (assuming you're not already lightning fast with a heavy rope)

i have buddy lee's tape. it is pretty good.
I'm a big fan of the jump rope. I have the accumeasure ball bearing one, it is pimp.
It's tough finding a good rope if you are taller. I'm 6'3, so 9 foot ones aren't too comfortable for me. Most stores don't carry over 9 i've noticed.
