    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Low o-goshi

The newaza specialist at my judo club has a kind of special very low version of o-goshi. For some reason he has done pretty much only newaza the last 15 years but a couple of months ago he asked if I wanted to do some tachi waza randori with him. During about ten minutes he nailed me with this throw over and over again, even when I came to expect it.

So last week I took my camera to training and asked if he could show it to me so I could get it on video to look closer. I figure you guys might be interested in seeing it too.

i rather like that. looks like alot of what keeps me from getting o goshi is eliminated (them hip checking, and a stiff forarm). i'll try this out tonight.

btw, any translation for what he's saying? i'm sure it's something like "i'm gripping low on his back, not on his belt, i pull him a bit to me to get him to step with his right foot, enter hips deep"

also, watching the video again, i noticed just before he throws he looks like he has alot of weight on the right foot and his center of gravity near his right foot. any word on the uke grabbing tori's right ankle and driving forward?

    You translation is pretty accurate.
    Exerpts
"I grip diagonally over his back to help press his shoulder down."
"I want him to resist me when I'm pulling"

Well he said that the only thing really preventing an ankle pick is the sleeve grip, so you have to be really dominating with that. Then again what you want is him to step forward, and that's what he'll do when he tries for the ankle pick.

I actually do an o-goshi where I drop to my knees while holding the belt. It's pretty similar to the one shown in the video but less explosive. In the video, he pops them up and throws them fairly high amplitiude. Instead of popping my hips up I drop to my knees and tuck the sleeve grip arm in and pull them through and onto their back. You usually end up in kuzure kesa which is nice. You need to have a flexible back/spine to pull it off though since you're going to be fairly twisted while he's rolling over you. I'll try to get a vid of it next week (next practice is Monday).

Does he only do it when you settle for that grip?

I'm no Judo expert, but I don't think I would use the grip you have in the video with him so deep and dominant on the inside.

sick throw though. I really like it.

alot of people will take an over the back/head grip for something like uchi mata. it's not an uncommon gripping position to find yourself in.

I was always taught that if you have an over the back/head grip, you keep the elbow down specifically to prevent people from coming in for o-goshi.

(Of course, usually I'm way more upright too ...)

Yes, I do a drop o-goshi. I did it by accident once but it's actually quite effective. Like I said though, you need a really flexible back/spine since it does put you in an awkward position. My coach just kind of shakes his head when he watches me do it but I'm known for unorthodox throws and moves. I'll try to video it next week since I'm actually curious about what it looks like too.
