Ruby Robert indeed. World Middleweight Champion won from Philadelphia Jack O'Brien. Stepped up to win World Heavyweight Championship from James J. Corbett and later won the inagauraul Light Heavyweight Championship when he was 40years or so. If I remember this right.

Terrific Choice. I'm not as knowledgeable about the whole of his career as I probably should be but, if memory serves, he had some 40+ 1st Round KOs. Good God.

Apparently, when he fought Jess Willard, 6ft6ins, etc, Dempsey was told by his notorious Gambling Manager, Jack "Doc" Kearns, that he'd bet the whole purse on a 1st Round KO. This partly helps to explain his ferocious performance. He was out of the Ring heading back to the Dressing Room when he was told that Willard was back on his feet and if Dempsey didn't return, he would forfeit the fight. Dempsey returned and massacred Willard - probably believing that he was now penniless.
He eventually left Kearns and explained it by saying, he was a great manager but they never had any money.
Sorry to distract but hope it helps/amuses.
