CA-MRSA *Warning*

CA-MRSA (pronounced CA 'mersa') is "Community Aquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus " also known as "flesh eating bacteria". This dangerous strein of staph is becoming more common in contact sports. Originally MRSA was found in hospitals and spread amongst patients, however due to genetic mutations it has found a home in the public.

It is transmitted via skin to skin contact and through bodily fluids. If it establishes a foothold in an open sore, cut, scrape, or abrasion, the effects can be serious up to death in extreme cases. CA-MRSA is thought to be carried by 1 in 5 adults in the United States in which it originated.

MRSA is also now being found in gyms and health clubs.

Very few products kill MRSA but there are some simple preventive measures that can be taken to keep from contracting MRSA.

1) Clean mats with a light bleach solution 2-3 times per week if heavily used.

2) Shower immediately after training in any contact sports or after getting home from the gym.

3) Wash clothes in hot water then on high heat in the dryer.

4) Wash hands well and frequently. Best is to scrubs hands 30-40 seconds. Soap DOES NOT kill MRSA but rather helps remove its presence from the skin.

5) Do not share razors, gym towels etc.

6) Wash and cover abrasions, skin cuts etc..

Eep. Thanks for the info. Luckily I never let anyone use my towels and razors and I always shower when I get back from the gym, but I wonder how often those mats are cleaned...

is MRSA really "flesh eating bacteria?" I thought it was just really strong staph. I was under the impression that flesh eating bacteria destroyed muscle/skin/etc... at a much more rapid pace.

edit: yeah, THIS is flesh eating bacteria. Nectrotizing Fascitis, and it's caused by a streptococcal, not a staphylococcal bacteria.

edit II: and don't think I'm minimizing MRSA. That **** will kill you. It's just not what I have always known to be flesh eating bacteria.

I didn't see a "health" section or I would have placed it there. Mods feel free to move it.

I may have been wrong in calling it "flesh eating virus", but the bacteria kills flesh at a rapid rate. Do a search on you tube for MRSA or on the web. You will see what I mean.
