So I've got a buddy in chicago looking for a good Kickboxing school. I'm trying real hard to keep him away from shitty places. Anybody from that area have any recommendations?

Shidokan US headquarters is at the Chicago Fitness Center.
Its mostly Knockdown Karate but I know they have some good kickboxers. If he is ONLY interested in Muay Thai/Kickboxing it would at least be a good place to start and ask about more kickboxing focused schools. Since they sponsor kickboxing promotions they have to have contacts with other schools that may be mor ein line with what he wants.

thanks...made the suggestion to him. he likes the idea, but it's on the north side, and he's on the south side and no car. He's going to see if there might be a way, but any south side gyms/schools would be ideal.

I'm on the South Side as well. Unfortunately, it's slim pickings down here.
There was a Shidokan dojo on Archer Ave. for awhile, but it's gone now.

They used to be primarily a performance wushu school that also did some San Da, but as I understand, they're turning more into a San Da school that also does performance wushu. One of my close friends trained there, and I joined in one of their classes once while visiting him. It's pretty good, as I understand it. A bit expensive, though.
One of their students had his first MMA fight a while ago. You can watch it here:

These guys are on the southside of Chicago at 111th and St. Louis. The teach boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, jujitsu and muay thai. Well rounded crew and a new gym.

They have a great Muay Thai program and have great fighters that regularly compete. They also keep pretty close close with other Kickboxing/Muay Thai/Jiu-Jitsu/MMA schools in Chicago (like Extreme Kung Fu), so alot of cross training between the schools happens, along with the occasional smoker.

Interesting choice for a necro. There is a good chance he found a gym at some point in the last 5 years.
