It's a typical karate dojo. He's probably not that into full contact, or else you would see it. I'd look somewhere else. Seriously, if everyone there is just in it for shits and giggles, and you can in trying to go hard, YOU'RE the asshole, in their view. Go take some Judo or something. Aren't there any full contact schools out there?

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

I have already paid for the Goju for September. So I will wait until October. Which is fine, I am sure I will learn plenty in Goju over the next month.
But, come October if and when I do go with the San Da I am worried about the equipment. How much can I expect to pay for all the gear? I am poor enough as is.

Side note: the San Da guys are cheaper than the Goju and train more often ? ! ? !

    Win - win ?

I'm thinking win win. Also, work on your wind and strength, may as well be ready, so you can work more technique once you get there. As far as the Goju goes, train your roundhouse and front kick as much as you can, and think of the kata's as coordination exercises. They won't help your fighting, per se, but they are a challenge to the motor system, which is helpful in general. The San Da place looks like fun.

I run 6 - 8 miles a week, do pushups ever other day, and crunches and leg lifts every day.
    Should I do anything else?

That sounds pretty good to me. Add some pull ups and squats and you'll be a monster in no time. good luck!

I just got back from the Dojo. 1 1/2 hours of Kata, no sparing. Oh .... I did learn how to present my self for a Kata Competition!! It was a lot of fun!

Oh hell.......who am I kidding. I am so frustrated. I want to spar so badly I think I may ask my wife to slap me around later.

    Ya......!!

ewwwwwwww The worst I have ever done was 30 minutes of kata and even then (maybe in embarrassment) my sensei made us spar for the next 30 minutes

    1 1/2 kata

Also no sparing for noobs is dumb.

    I sparred my second class

All you need to do for noobs is limit the contact level.

    I hate to say it

    Quit and go somewhere else
