It might be an indication that you're suffering from some sort of sleep apnea. If your insurance will cover it, you may want to go see an otorhynolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist) and ask him about a sleep study. It's just one night at the clinic and you should be out the door by 5 or 6 the next morning. If it turns out that you're really not breathing for a good portion of the night, he may recommend a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, or surgery.

Sdave is extremely, extremely right. Insomnia has been wrecking my life the past couple months and, in my desperation, I saw a sleep doctor. I paid about $200 for him to tell me what Dave told you for free.
If you decide to go on any sleep meds, make a specific point to ask your doctor for something non-habit forming, like Rozereum. Stay the living **** away from Ambien or Xanax unless nothing else works, and even then closely monitor your dosage. I've been on Ambien for six months and now nothing short of four pills will put me out. The hangovers are atrocious, the pills are a nauseating sickly-sweet taste, and you'll probably drunk dial Eddie Bravo as I once did.
