I'm still not sure where you're coming from with this thread, Dan.

Who are these people that don't understand karate? How do you know your instructor does? How do you know you do?

I'm not denying i've done well to make 3rd kyu in 18 months, but then i've put at least 3 hours at the dojo a week plus several hours outside. I am also fortunate in being able to train with the most senior grades in the organisation regularly.

    Dude

18 months from beginner to brown belt is bullshido / belt factory money making crap

3 hours is not a lot of time

    It sounds bad

It took me a little over 6 years training 3-4 days/week and extra days at home to get a Shodan in Shorin-Ryu. Prior to that, I spent 2 years in another Karate style and a year training in KF.

Did you start as a complete noob (i.e., no ma experience) and went to 3rd kyu in 18 mo.?

I do, just mainly in my own time. Prior to this i also trained in kickboxing so am not a total martial arts newb.

In answer to your delicately phrased criticism of my skill and style (thank you) low grades may be taken i feel quite legitimately much faster than higher ones, especially if the student does well, don't you think? The next 3 gradings to blackbelt will take me three years, and the path to blackbelt in my style usually takes 6 years so i am rather an oddity in that regard.

It seems to me much more rubbish to screw years of unnecessary tuition out of someone, under the pretense of tradition.
My sensei used to represent his country and was 2nd in the world, so i feel pretty safe under his tutelage.

    cheers

Hey Danjo, can you do that stuff where they smash wood over your shins while you carry them big jars full of heavy around the room?
    How big are your knuckles?
Do you have the real krotty?
Do you kick with the ball of your bare foot or the evil toe-fist?
    Evil toe-fist is cool.

I thought you said earlier that the money you paid allowed you the right to train 4 times/week with higher belts (5th and 6th dans). You only go 3 hrs/week? 45min classes?

Am I right, or did I miss something?

Oh, and as for your original post, yes, there is a lot of **** out there. The key is to make sure that yours isn't before you point fingers.

FeryK: classes last for 1.5 hours, regrettably i only get out to 2-3 a week which is a situation i am going to remedy

My belt structure goes: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, purple with white stripe, brown, brown with black stripe, brown with 2 black stripes, black.
i skipped yellow straight to orange and then skipped green next time around, but i didn't get the belts! and i really liked the colours too....:icon_twis

Rooster: don't be such a fanny, i never implied i was 'it', you don't have to be perfect (Lord knows everything i do is far from it) to notice problems in the system. ( have mastered the evil toe fist -level 3- but i wouldn't expect you to know what that is!):jerkit2yf
