    Is anyone using Glycosamine? Does it work?

    A couple of the guys at my school say it's good for cartildge/joints, but I haven't found much info on whether it actually makes any difference in preventing joint pain/injury.

    Anyone know anything about it?

    i've tried it and didn't notice any difference after about two months of taking it. (i have torn ligaments in both ankles and messed up cartilige in one knee)

    found out later from my aikido sensei, who is also a pharmacist, that glucosamine can raise your cholesterol and is hard on the heart

    No conclusive results from me either. It may have just been placebo effect or the injuries healing naturally.

    There hasn't been any results published showing it works, however this doesn't mean it doesn't. It is supposed to be taken for long term benefits and to stop further damage, it has never been marketed as a short term fix.

    I was about to say there has never been anything reported about negative side effects, but kismasher has posted some interesting info on that...

    *shrug* I similarly heard that shark cartilage can help with that as well. (Not that shark cartilage is special, but since their whole skeleton is cartilage, it's plentiful from them as a source.)

    I suppose supplying an excess of "building blocks" for any part of the body (muscle, blood, cartilage, etc.) may help produce more of it...but I suspect you need to do something to USE the excess or prompt the body into processing it. You can eat lots of protein, but without working your muscles, it just converts to fat. Same idea, if you don't use it, it flushes or contaminates your body.

    CT, i have heard the same thing about eating chicken,cartilage. where you would get it, i have no idea.
