    Hell yeah! Hell no!

I don't need no stinking taser.

    I want a taser SHOTGUN:

TASER XREP: New Details, Nastier than Ever
More details are now available for the TASER XREP, the decidedly nasty TASER-in-a-bullet we brought to you last month. Looking like a cross between a nixie tube and an insect, the XREP (eXtended Range Electronic Projectile) is fired from a standard 12 gauge gun and has a 100 feet range.

On launch, a ripcord activates the capsule and "Three torsion spring fins deploy, causing the projectile to spin, even when launched from a smooth bore, providing superior accuracy, and flight stabilization". When it hits the victim, the XREP spikes them with four barbed electrodes, which deliver their shock for 20 seconds, which seems a little excessive.

Hurting? Don't try to rip the thing off. It'll deliver the current straight into your hand. It looks like TASER have all angles covered. For the full lowdown and video links, see Noah's great piece over at the Danger Room.

    ----------------------------------------------

    Link.

More details from the Danger Room link above:

As the TASER XREP is deployed, a rip cord attached between the shell and the projectile activates the projectile. Once activated, the TASER XREP is ďliveĒ as it comes out of the barrel. The XREP autonomously generates incapacitating Neuro Muscular Incapacitation for 20 continuous seconds -- enough time to close the distance and take the offender into custody without risking injury to officers. ["20 seconds! Good lord, that's a long time to be gettin' Tasered," Giz oh-so-rightly says.]

...The nose assembly of the XREP contains 4 forward facing barbed electrodes and the collapsible electrode cowling. On impact, the forward facing barbed electrodes attach to the body of the target.

The energy from the impact breaks a series of fracture pins that release the main chassis of the XREP which remains connected to the nose by a Kevlar reinforced fiber. As the chassis falls away, 6 cholla electrodes automatically deploy. Named after the famous desert cactus, the cholla electrodes penetrate clothing to deliver the TASER XREPís powerful NMI over a greater body mass.

Another innovative and unique feature of the XREP nose is the reflex engagement electrode. A normal reaction to the pain of a projectile impact is for the subject to grab at the impact site. If the subject tries to grab or disconnect the XREP projectile, the reflex engagement electrodes complete a circuit allowing TASER NMI to discharge from the Nose Electrodes, through the subjectís body, out to the hand that grabbed the XREP. This creates a significant spread that allows the XREP pulses to affect a large body mass, causing overpowering Neuro Muscular Incapacitation.
Wow, that is out of control.... But pretty damn awesome, too.

Check the Danger Room link (about a third of the way down) for more info and vids.

Well, yay or nay? I'm no expert but thought this was too interesting not to post and get some opinions on it.

    Nope. Up next is TASERBOT!

    Taser Unveils Crime-Fighting Robot

    POSTED: 3:46 pm PDT July 9, 2007

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- TASER International, headquartered in Scottsdale, has signed a deal with iRobot Corp. to develop a robot that can fire a taser device to subdue a subject.
The new device will allow law enforcement, federal, and military users to launch TASER technology from an iRobot at a safe distance to engage, incapacitate, and control dangerous suspects without exposing those personnel, the suspect, or bystanders to unnecessary risks, the company said in a news release.

"TASER International is very excited to be entering into this alliance with a forward thinking and proactive company such as iRobot," said Tom Smith, Chairman of TASER International.
