From the knees is almost as shitty, IMO.
In fact, my 'favoured' "equal" position on the ground is face to face, with right legs intertwined.

My gym is really small so starting from the knees is a space saving tactic as well as other concerns. We don't have room for 5 sets of guys to be jokeying around and shooting in for takedowns. We start from a lot of positions as well. Face to face laying down and having a trainer tell us GO. Back to back and told when to start. But these are more for the sake of scrambleing. I'd have to agree that starting back to back all of the time is kind of... well... um.. retarded for lack of a better term.
