When I start back to back in judo, I usually just roll backwards instead of spinning around. This has gotten me in trouble a few times ;-)
In bjj when we start on the knees, I use judo throws from my knees (osoto gari, uchi mata, etc). If they post a leg it is even more fun. -

The back to back stuff in Judo was just to start you out even and prevent you from standing up for the advantage. Other than that it just kept you both on the mat for Newaza. That meant you couldn't stand up to pass the guard etc. We also went knee to knee as well. It is as good a way as any to work out and practice. Of course the "takedowns" in Judo were our standing work and it was always good to seperate them during class. It sucks to be on the ground working out when people are being thrown on top of you. It also sucks to be standing and trip over each other. It's all economy of mat space and how you use it. Back to back or knee to knee, it's all good.

Really man, you don't have to worry about being prepared for a throwdown. I went to the mega in ATL with 3mo of bjj and 1mo of mt, it was still a lot of fun.
The rules are what you and the person you're sparring at the time agree on. Some folks just like doing standup, others may only want to do ground, some may want to do mma, contact level is up to you to decide. -
Why did they never try this....

Where do you train BJJ? I work in Leeds & it's a mad rush to get back to Brad for training.
If you know King's Gym? train there with Team FulikazanLast edited by Nate1481; 6/29/2007 3:33am at .

I always thought back to back created randomness when going to the ground, much like it could be after a throw or a failed throw.
Does that make sense with the poor word choice and all?
I hate back to back personally, and always get to be at a disadvantage because of it, but I think I can understand why it's done.

we start back to back, whip around on our knees to face to face...... and start from our knees just like most bjj players do. only we start with a "hajime" (sp?) instead of a handslap. i sometimes still handslap our judo guys and they just look at me funny but whatever. i really don't see what the big deal is. both ways you're starting on the ground.
