Man Killed For Throwing Tomatoes At Car, Police Say
Police Look For Driver Of Lincoln Or Cadillac

MILLERSBURG, Ohio -- A motorist fired a shotgun into a cornfield at a group that threw tomatoes at his car, killing a man of Amish heritage, authorities said.

Steven L. Keim, 23, of Applecreek, Ohio, was with about 10 other members of the Amish community, ages 15 to 23, who were hiding in a cornfield Monday night along state Route 241 just north of Mount Hope, about 60 miles south of Cleveland.
The group told the Holmes County Sheriff's office that they were throwing tomatoes and firing paintball guns at passing vehicles.

Holmes County has its share of thrown vegetables and other pranks by young people in the Amish community every fall, Chief Deputy Nathan Fritz said. "They'll steal their neighbor's buggy and put it on top of a building," Fritz said. Holmes County is a rural area that has what's believed to be the world's largest Amish population. The Amish do not believe in modern conveniences such as electricity and automobiles. It was the first homicide in five years in Holmes County and the first firearm-related homicide in about 30 years, Fritz said. "I'm sure the whole community out there is in a certain state of shock," he said.

Although Keim was raised Amish, the self-employed roofing contractor had a driver's license and had left the Amish church, Fritz said. Many Amish teenagers, like the group in the cornfield, experiment with popular culture then later return to the Amish lifestyle, Fritz said.

According to a sheriff's department news release, after a northbound Lincoln or Cadillac was struck with tomatoes, the driver stopped, got out and threatened to shoot whoever threw the tomatoes. The vehicle continued northbound, then turned around and drove past the cornfield again. The car was struck with tomatoes a second time. About 25 minutes later the vehicle traveled past the cornfield two more times. On a third pass, the driver stopped and challenged the group to throw more tomatoes, then fired three to five rounds into the cornfield, striking Keim multiple times. The sheriff's department was looking for a middle-aged male suspect of medium height.

If I was throwing tomatoes at a car and the driver got out with a shotgun, I would be across that field like Michael Johnson. I know because I've been chased while taking a shortcut across a farmer's land. I'd done two fields before he'd done half the first one.

An unfortunate, and avoidable situation. Obviously the boys knew better, as I assume the driver with the shotgun did also. He would have had better effect calling the police, or even firing his shotgun over the kids heads. I know that sure as hell owuld have scared me!
