UFC plans mixed martial arts card in Montreal this fall, first foray into Canada

UFC plans mixed martial arts card in Montreal this fall, first foray into Canada

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (CP) - The UFC is coming to Canada this fall.

The mixed martial arts circuit will be in Montreal in October, UFC president Dana White told The Canadian Press. He did not provide a date for the show but said the decision to come to Canada was made Saturday.

The UFC had planned to hold a show at Montreal's Bell Centre on April 7 but the card was called off in December. At the time White said: "There were a lot of different things that made that fight fall apart."

Now it appears Montreal is back on the UFC dance card.

White has called Canada "a phenomenal breakthrough market" for the UFC, citing pay per view buy rate and ticket sales as evidence of the Canadian interest in mixed martial arts.

Montreal has a thriving MMA scene, with the TKO circuit running successful cards at the Bell Centre already. It is also home to former UFC middleweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

With the UFC having already expanded to England and Northern Ireland, White is now looking to closer territories north and south of the U.S. border. A card in Mexico is expected in the first half of 2008.

"England, Canada and Mexico, those are all kind of no-brainers for us," White said Saturday prior to UFC 72.

The UFC also plans to expand into mainland Europe in 2008.

After UFC 72 in Belfast, shows are planned in Sacramento, Calif. (UFC 73, July 7), Las Vegas (UFC 74, Aug. 25) and London, England (UFC 75, Sept. 8).

St. Pierre is due to fight Josh Koscheck at UFC 74 in his first fight since losing the 170-pound title to Matt (The Terror) Serra in April in Houston at UFC 69.

Toronto is not an option for the UFC since mixed martial arts is not sanctioned in Ontario.

So this fall will be UFC 76+ now? Since GSP is a Canadian star, we would expect him to fight. I know the UFC wanted a St. Pierre vs Hughes 3rd match in Montreal but that's unlikely to happen now. That could still happen if Hughes and St. Pierre win.

UFC says hockey conflict means MMA card in Canada may not happen until 2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CP) - UFC plans to come to Canada have hit another snag, with UFC president Dana White pointing the finger at hockey as the reason why.

Last month, White said the mixed martial arts organization was coming to Montreal in October. But on Saturday night, after UFC 73, he said he was having problem getting a date at the Bell Centre.

"You guys have got too much frigging hockey up there," he told a Canadian reporter at the post-fight news conference. "As soon as you cancel some hockey games, we'll be up there."

The UFC had originally planned to hold a Montreal show on April 7 but the card was called off last December. At the time White said: "There were a lot of different things that made that fight fall apart."

Now it appears, the UFC won't be north of the border until 2008.

"I think so. We're still working on it," White said Saturday.

UFC shows slated for later this year already include Las Vegas, London, Cincinnati and Anaheim, Calif.

Hah. No doubt he's trying to get a Saturday night slot which is usually when a hockey game is playing.

He's smoking something strong if he ever thinks that he will get a Saturday date at the Bell Centre between September and April through June (depending on how deep the Canadiens get in the playoffs). Saturday night is to hockey here as Saturday afternoon is to college football in the States.

With diplomatic skills like that, Dana would be awarded the medal of freedom if he was part of the Bush administration.

****; and here I am, the only Canadian who doesn't really like hockey all that much, being denied seeing in person the largest organisation of one sport I'm really interested in because of HOCKEY.

Last TKO was a fucking joke, I really felt insulted; they pushed a semi-pro hockey goon as the biggest event of the night; he was really the second worst fighter ever (the worst being his opponent; trained by his fucking father in "Kung fu and Judo"; I felt fucking insulted, the guy didn't know how to punch and didn't know how to take a man down).

Unless TKO gets their act together and stop selling out to the pro wrestling crowd, they're never going to keep the respectability they gained with some of their former fighters going into larger leagues.

We need a serious MMA organisation in Québec NOW, and if TKO doesn't provide, then HELL YES, UFC, I'll welcome you with open arms.

The irony of you whining about guys trained in Kung Fu and Judo seems to be lost on you.

    Oh, don't worry, it wasn't.

Which is partly why I was so insulted. The guy was not trained in anything but getting the **** beaten outta him, which is exactly why the organisation put him there.

They couldn't have the pro wrestling / semi-pro hockey fans that came to see their main event realise that being big and being a hockey goon doesn't mean you're a good fighter.
