Use them for convenience, not for the primary source.
Drinking a shake is more convenient than a heavy protein meal, post workout, for most people, so it's a good option there.
We can put a man on the moon, but have yet to make a good shaker bottle.
I switched to EAS, and it has seemed to blend really well so far.
I mainly use water, occasionally, I'll use almond/soy/ or 1 % milk.
Outside of convenience, the only real time a fast absorbing protein is wanted is near your workouts. A slow releasing protein has advantages at other times, especially during periods of fasting(sleep, etc).
This is why I think the best overall protein supplement would be a blend of whey and casein, for most non-bodybuilding types.
The faster a protein breaks down, the faster it can be broken down into glucose as well, for energy or for storing as fat, depending upon how anabolic you are at that moment in time.
Different powders taste and mix much differently. Even the ones that are clumpy though can be fixed! Take GNC's brand. Mix it for 30 seconds with a spoon, its still clumpy. Let i sit for like 2 minutes and it is smooth and good.
I don't agree with mixing protein shakes with water or non-fat milk.
Fat is needed to synthesise protein
Supplements scare me. I've been checking out some of the mixes at GNC, and some of that stuff has more ingredients than Crystal Meth.
I'm on the lookout for natural supplements made from actual food ingredients, not concocted in a lab by some guys who probably cook LSD in their spare time.
I'm caffeine and aspartame sensitive, also, so I have to be careful.
OK. What ingredients are too much? You can find protein that only contains whey protein concentrate and flavorings. Straight up amino acids contain one ingredient. Why are you afraid...weird.
Uhhh If you're referring to the nutrient limiting factor, than that's something else entirely.
