We can all help stop bouncing!

I keep seeing videos of guys sparring and a lot of us have a really bad habit of bouncing. I think some of it comes from TKD and some of it comes from wanting to be "light on your feet". The problem is you can be quick and light without bouncing up in the air.

When you bounce your whole body up you lose your connection to the ground. You can't generate power from kicks or strikes in this position and you are very easy to take down. Additionally a lot of people with this problem tend to break the bouncing rythm and settle their weight right before they strike. This creates a really obvious tell and you become easy to predict and counter.

What is the answer? I know that one thing that helped me settle down was stance training and wall mount makiwara work. I'm not going to suggest that because I know most people won't do it. What you should do is tell your sparring partners that its a problem you want to work on. Then ask them to exploit it dramatically. I did this to Kintananon at the last throwdown sweeps and takedowns are a good reminder that you are not rooted. Just have your partner go for low leg kicks and sweeps it is very easy when you bounce a lot.

It really depends on how you're bouncing. I agree that if you do it a lot and bounce high enough that you actually leave the ground, you're not helping yourself and making yourself look silly in the process, but it can make you faster in some cases. And, yes, it's really really good to do in TKD, and point sparring in general, because in that case speed > power.

I've never had this particular problem but I would think shadow boxing would go a long way. If you're concentrating on good footwork and proper form you won't be bouncing. It seems to me the heavy bag would also help, since you won't be able to throw a decent shot if you're of balance from bouncing.

I'm really not talking about playing tag. For the record i don't believe it is ever a good idea. Even if you somehow believe it makes you faster in point sparring it still builds terrible habits for the rest of your martial life.

I fought a "bouncer" recently. By the end of the first round I had his timing down and his bouncing around gave me a grand opening for a shot in. He'd come in with a two jabs then a right and bounce out. So I covered up and bobbed and when he bounced out I took my shot. I was going for a single leg but wound up with a good body lock and the ensuing slam bounced his noggin off the floor and the ref stopped it. Maybe it had less to do with bouncing and more to do with him being way too predictable. But I remember his exagerated "float like a butterfly" routine the most.
