Thread: Rio Heroes

I did a search and didn't see anything about this. But if it was discussed elsewhere then go ahead and trash this thread.
Has everyone heard about Rio Heroes? It's a relatively new fight organization trying to do a throwback to vale tudo.
I heard about it because a bunch of bjj guys I'm friends with were talking about how it's 'making MMA back into a spectacle' and all that ****. I personally hate that line. Every sport that has observers is a spectacle, by definition. "Spectacle" and "sport" are not mutually exclusive. The 'human cockfighting' line is trite garbage too. The problem with animal fighting lies in abuse and consent, not IMO in the violence. We're all cool with watching animals rip each other apart on the discovery channel, at least I like it, but it's different when it seems that they are being forced to do so. No one in vale tudo events is forced to fight, so the analogy to cockfighting is vacuous.
There will always be martial artists and teens who want to test themselves in fights. I can't blame them for thinking that current Zuffa MMA rules are a little unnecessary.
So I'm all for vale tudo events like this being broadcast online. They'll be taking place anyway, especially in Brazil, whether people watch it online or not. As long as Zuffa and American athletic commissions push regulations on MMA, there will be room and demand for less regulated events. If people are worried about it 'tarnishing the image MMA has fought for' then just call if vale tudo to distinguish them.
You can probably get the videos for free on youtube and youtube wanna-be sites.

I am in favor of this. If the guys want to get in there and compete in that type of enviroment, they should be free to do so. I do have a question for the OP: Does Rio Heroes do weight classes? I could not find anything yea or nay on their website.

Oh, and I forgot to mention earlier that, according to an article on sherdog, Wanderlei cried when he heard about it. It sounds to me like he's just posturing for the media to distance himself from his the more controversial IVC days, but who knows.
