The latter is so much better for building strength throughout the core as well as using the lats more efficiently.
I'm on a personal training course at the moment and learning proper technique has made me realise how badly about 90% of the average gym-goers techniques sucks. Everyone seems to be obsessed with rushing and jerking their movements and they are certainly not training for power.
