Hi my name is Travis. I don't study a martial art yet. I would like to but I don't know what I want to do yet. I do know that I want to take this seriously and train under a good master that can help me with my strengths and weaknesses. I saw some stuff on how to tell if a master is in it for the money or for teaching. But is there a list of steps you can take? And how do you check a teachers crudentials? You can ask them what their crudentials are but how do you know what are some good ones and what are some bad ones, or even if the teacher is lying?

Oh and I apologize if this has already been asked many times.

    Hey Travis. Welcome.
One question you may want to ask of this board... Which is superior: striking or grappling?

    PD,

This is the reason why I brought up that suggestion in the moderator forum, for when we run into these types of questions.

    Travis,

For now, watch some of classes and see how they teach. Do they looked well discipline or do they look like they are hanging at a friend's house. Do the advance belts (providing the school has a ranking system)show much more polished body movements than the beginning belts. Does the master claim some secret teaching that has never been given to anyone else in the world?

Let us know you location and we can try to help you out a bit more.

It depends what you are looking for. If it's just fighting ability then go for MMA. If it's just for a bit of self-defence, go TMA. TMA has all of the belts and gradings etc., but it's a lot easier to be taken in by fraud in TMA.

the first problem you have is the idea of a master...if oyu look around this thread you will see many references to 'masters'...that title does not mean much when it is given to one's self or given by a brainwashed cult...don;t look for a master look for a good teacher of an effective style...

I live in Indianapolis, IN. I'm not really into grappling because its something I don't think I'm good at, but I do think I could be very fast and powerful it I learned to use my body and strength effectively. I've done some weird things with my strength before and I want to be able to control and utilize it. I know I should eventually take a grappling art so that I am well rounded but I don't know about it now.

I also like to reverse an opponents power directed at me and use it against them. I had a couple of friends who were into martial arts when I was younger so I know some basic things.
I'm not looking to just learn for fitness and sport, I want to learn an art entirely. I also don't want to spend a year at a school figuring out if the teacher is a good teacher.
This may sound like I'm full of myself but I believe I have real talent (although I would be a beginner) and I want to be able to use it in my prime and not start in my late 20's and stuff.

    I'm 18 about 155-160 and 5'10" 5'11" I kind of look skinny and lean.

What does MMA and TMA stand for?
