BJJ in Dreary Old Adelaide...?

(Ok, first post... Gotta get rid of the annoying massive text thing... May as well ask a question too!!)

Yo! I'm 22yo, and I live in Adelaide, South Australia, and have recently been doing reading (and viewing videos of) about BJJ recently... So, feeling rather inspired at the moment, I'm researching starting BJJ a bit later in the year with some mates.

I've done a bit of googling, and found, so far:
ABS Extreme Combat
Hockley Martial Arts (of the Machado variety i think) (which is too far away from me)
Street Defensive Tactics
And i think there was one or two more that i can't find anymore!!!

I was wondering if there were some Adelaideans out there who could reccomend somewhere in particular, or let me know of some more schools here that I can look into myself...? Or can help me with the difference between the ones that I did find?

(anywhere in the CBD, and further south is pretty easy for me to get to - i live in Holdfast Bay area)

You need to contact those places and ask them what rank they hold in BJJ because it doesn't specify on the websites. Anything less than purple is pretty dubious BJJ instruction.

Thanks for the tip.

I just found one - SABJJ.
The instructor there is a Purple belt of Peter de Been (who is a Carlos Gracie Jnr black belt, 2nd degree according to wikipedia), who has his own school in South Australia -Peter De Been Jiu Jitsu- which is way too far out of town for me!

(I also found out that SABJJ is a division of Peter de Been's school, which is a Gracie Barra school)

The website you linked to for SABJJ is very much outdated.

The school address at peterdebeen.com is the current Peter de Been SA affiliate. I highly recommend the guys there, having trained with the current (purple belt) instructor when he came down to Melbourne a couple of months ago.

Drat! The de Been school is about 50km from home, and the classes are not at the most uni-convenient times... I didn't think to look at the date on the page!!

you may find a judo place closer to your home and travel the long distance to crosstrain at bjj maybe once a fortnight to supplement.

you wont progress as quickly, but you will still progress (and not waste hours and hours travelling)

You may want to try asking in the Australasian forum of mma.tv or in the forums at infinitemma.

Kym from ABS is a current MMA fighter and posts on mma.tv, and adambjjoz who posts at infinitemma trains bjj in somewhere in Adelaide (I think ABS as well).

I was looking for a BJJ place not too long ago too, but ended up taking Judo at the Adelaide Uni club, at the Tehbarton campus of the uni, just off Port Road, not far from the city at all.

I'm still looking at adding BJJ to my port folio though, one of mates trains Krav at SDT, so I might hit him up to see if he can give me any info on how good their BJJ is (if he has any idea)
