No, running is absolute best for multiple opponents. Ask any NHB fighter.
Who in the hell are YOU to offer the "best" solution for multiples, after calling "Northern Mantis" an "excellent defense system"?
What makes it so excellent?
In REAL world, not the fairy tales worlds that your Blackbelt teachers tell you about, boxers beat the living crap out of kung fu fellows, and kickboxers beat the crap out of kung fu fellows.
In REAL world, if you anticipate fights with no weapons in which you will not want to go to the ground, you will do smart to train kickboxing.

I wouldn't come close to it, either, cause it stinks bad.

Yeah, I hear those NHB guys tend to do a lot of running from multiple opponents, considering that the only way they know how to win a fight is by going to the ground for a submission, which is real effective against more than one guy. Who the hell ever heard of a fight against multiple attackers on the ground?
Anyway, staying on topic, the arts everyone here have listed are pretty much good choices, but you're going to want to make a choice based on what your goal is. Straight self-defense, I'd go with JKD or Arnis. Arnis has good joint-locking techniques, and the stickwork can be adapted to multiple everyday objects, like a cane.
But for martial arts as a lifelong self-development endeavour, Aikido and WC/WT are good choices."The morning glory blooms for an hour. It differs not at heart from the giant pine, which lives for a thousand years." -

I do0ubt that fuckwit Stipe has ever trained in anything but Tae Bo. Bet he thinks he can defend himself, too. I'll say it again: just because you suck at an art, or are simply too stupid to understand it, doesn't mean you have to diss it. Just shut up and move along, that way you won't make a complete ass of yourself in the process.
Go visit an Aikido or Wing Chun dojo/kwoon. Challenge the sensei/sifu to a round of free sparring. If you actually bother to, tape it and send us the vid of you getting your ass beat down. -

Ratskeller,
I am about your size (although I have shed some pounds and hover between 210~215 now)
I would agree with Wing Chun and Aikido in the defense part. I would also go with Jujutsu. However if you want to PLOW through someone I would also recommend BAJI.
Every art has the methods of dealing with attacks just find the one that suits you. But Master Miyagi (Karate Kid Osensei!) said it best, "Punch come. NO be there." It is STILL the best method of dealing with attacks! :)

Stipe, don't hold back....
Anyway...BJJ is great, I train in it myself, but it is not the "beginning, end & in between" of all...
I agree with Asia & Chick "don't be there for the punch" or redirect. There are many arts that teach redirecting (trapping) & straight blast skills
Aikido, Wing Chun are two pretty good arts for "redirecting & using the other persons momentum & weight against them...
Then adding MT & boxing for striking & mobility (gotta love those knees, elbows)
& icing on the cake JJ/BJJ for those times when your going to the ground....
That's how I like to train & feel it's a pretty complete system...

Hey Migo, went to a gathering of the pack in Hermosa beach, it was great...When was the last time you went??
I loved it, I swore I was going to become a "dog brother" & while I'm still training with sticks, doesn't look like I'll become a dog bro for awhile..lol
