    Hapkido?

    Hello,

I am looking for a martial art to practice. I did a little bit of research and Hapkido seems interesting to me. It seems to be versitile. Anyway, I am in the Portland, OR area and I found this school: http://www.prmaa.com/ (Pacific Rim Martial Arts Academy).

I was wondering if you had any thoughts about the school?

    Thanks.

How about you check out the Straight Blast Gym just around the corner instead.

And I really do mean JUST AROUND THE CORNER:

Ditto. With that many high ranks I think I"d ask for some serious paper work.

They have a good reputation and that Hapkido guy is almost assuredly making up all those ranks. Check it out.

Korean martial arts tend to all claim the same history (2000 yrs ago created by silla flower warriors) and Korean martial artists seem to think just because they are versatile in one art, since they all have the same history and come from the same place, they must be versatile in ALL the arts.

This is the only explanation I can offer for Korean martial artists who say they are ranked in:

Taekwondo+Hapkido+Gumdo+Yudo+whatever the hell else was in Korea when it was occcupied and bitchslapped by every other asian country.

Honestly, if you want to get a combat system WORTH your TIME and MONEY go to Straight Blast Gym.

If you want to pay to bow for an hour every day go do that Korean junk.

Ask to see his certificates then do a background check on the orgizations and instructors who gave him those ranks. Many ranks can be outright bought and most just give it to themselves. I could care less one way or the other. If the guy is sincerely decent instructor fine by me but I highly doubt it. I can see having a high rank in TKD and Hapkido since those two tend to go hand and hand. Jujitsu, Judo and Aikido sort of go hand in hand, but they're pretty high ranks.

It wouldn't be too far fetched but jeez if those don't sound fishy.
