No I didn't read the rules I watched the video. It looked like sweeps only to me not leg kicks. No problem though I believe you. :P I'm sure Kung Fu has teh deadly leg kicks :P

I suck, so I have to really bring up my game to be at their level

I hate that style of headgear..
There is a good entry on Wilkipedia for Lei Tai describing the history and modern-day incarnations. They have them on rafts in some tournaments. We are going to do some free sparring on rafts this summer up north for fun.." they will supply you with everything else if you don't have it. (headgear, gloves, shoes) cup and mouthguard you have to bring.
martial arts shoes are generally those adidas tae kwon do shoes or any of the knockoffs.
you can bring your own sweatpants but they have to be blue and yellow.
as far as getting the headgear ahead of time, i have only seen one headgear of that style that wasn't total crap... the one they have at www.kwonusa.com the nice thing about that one is that the face cage is removeable so the headgear is still useful when not being used for lei tai.
if you have good fingerless gloves with a similar amount of padding, bring em, otherwise just use their gloves. they examine your gloves before you fight and if the ref doesn't like them they will give you another pair to wear.
i wouldn't judge everyone from that tournament by the videos you saw, there are a number of people who can fight well who compete.
there was a guy named vanderlei lucas from brazil who was the champion for several years and he was very skilled (i think he retired by now) pretty much all the guys who make it to the finals are very good fighters, for anyone who thinks they are going to go there and clean up just cause we're a bunch of kung fu guys."Face punches are an essential character building part of a martial art. 1) do wrestling shoes count as martial arts shoes?
2) uhhh if women can't hit to the chest, that means that can only head hunt / hit to the legs?
3) what weight classes are there?
4) how long does it take to get to maryland?
5) can anyone compete?

Why is YouTube down when I want to watch the vids?
Why is this not in NY where all the cool people are at?
rsobrien: are you still in Enshin?
