The problem is posers -- people with kempt beards and horned helmets who claim to teach the secrets of the Masters of yore. Real vikings were unkempt, hardcore, and wore un-horned helmets; and I assure you they did live sparring (although not all participants were alive when they finished sparring). See also holmgång.

Personally, I blame Ashida Mjölnirsdottir and the Black Dragonboat Fighting Society.

Jokes aside, there does exist something called glima, an Icelandic form of wrestling.

I find the thought of a badly-bearded Ashida Mjölnirsdottir and the Black Dragonboat Fighting Society wearing horned helmets and doing axe and Viking sword kata much more amusing, though.

To all the lurkers/thread surfers who are actually confused, lol, IMA = Internal Martial Arts.

I don't know about you guys, but my traditional MA experience really helped me when I started up boxing and muay thai; it would've seriously taken me a hell of a lot longer to figure out the whole concept of kinetic linking if not for that.

I don't think the whole specificity thing is really all that important; as long as you're not just dwelling on one type of exercise, I would say it was a small difference if anything.

It is a big difference which is why athlete conditioning programs are designed in accordance with specificity not just random exercises the conditioning coach feels like prescribing.
