Can someone tell me the difference between kata and forms? I have always thought they were the same.

Okay, well then, not all kata are created equally.

kata and drilling just teach you the bare basics of the movement for a technique. After much hair splitting I'll call doing slow shadowboxing "kata", because its really the same idea I think. Just not stylized into stupidity.

Its a foundation. A base. you do need it, and should mantain it (of course you should be good at yoru techniques) but you need to move on. You can't just build our foundation forever, you gotta move on and build something on it. Thats what seperates a good art from a crap one IMO. Crap ones just have the world's biggest foundation and nothing of substance built off of it. Good ones take that and do some good drills and sparring to develop your fighting.

I'd like to preface this by saying... Please excuse spelling as I'm not entirely sure how to spell some of these kata names.

I've always liked most of the Pinan katas. My favorite is probably Pinan Yidan or Ohdan.

I also have a great love of Bassai (I realize there are many but I like most of the versions of it).

Also, one of my favorites to do is Cun San Gum (Shotokan practicioners have a similar kata called Kankudai?)
